Dogs 2017

WINSLOW
(10/30/17)

I look
down

unable
to bring
any programmed
proclamations
to mind

she glows
with new
life

she is probably
only weeks old

possibly days
for all
that I know

I hardly
know
the father

my next door
neighbor

but he's
pushing
a stroller by
as I'm working
in the yard

I feel forced
to say something

"you have
a passenger"

I say

he glows
a bit
as well

"yes

yes
I do"

he tells
me
her name

different
but what
the hell

he says
that she really
wasn't too happy
about going
for a walk

"the first
of many things
that she will
not
be happy with"

is my brilliant
welcome
to the neighborhood
for his child

"no doubt"

he says
after some
hesitation

big smile
still intact

"well
I had better
keep her
moving"

I wave
a weak
goodbye

life
passing
me by

I look
down

it's October

weeds
are still sprouting
from the
lawn
