WATERING DEAD GRASS
(12/13/17)

I am happy
for the affluent

I really
am

I know
that I benefit
in some small way
from their
wealth

from their
vision
for the wealthy

they make
up
for my lack
of ambition

my dearth
of drive

they make
the world
a better place

with their
lucrative
businesses

their fancy
homes

but
when I see
the torrents
of water
running
the street curbs
of their neighborhoods
in December

I wonder
at the waste

at the thirsty
throats
throughout
the world

those
who would fight
for one drink
from those
upscale
gutters

perhaps
the rich
run their sprinklers
year round
to dampen
any fires of protest
begun by those
less fortunate

those dry
lawns
would burn
so easily

and so
soon too
the mansions
