Dogs 2017

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
(9/6/17)

the end
is never
in sight

we
could labor
24/7/365
and still
never reach
any sort
of conclusion

we
high grade

prioritize

give each other
thumbs up
for compartmentalizing
our chores
into completable
portions

feeling good
about our efforts
for a few
minutes

a few
hours

then realizing
that there is
so
much more
left
to be done

we wonder
at our surfeit
of work

a blessing?

a curse?

our offices
are filled
with a frustrated
anxiety-ridden
staff

they tend
to flinch
at any sudden
movements

sounds

they run
out the door
at 5pm
as if fleeing
pursuing assailants

I turn off
the lights
after them

lock
the doors

pick up
any trash
from the parking
lot
before leaving

surveying
the clean surface
as I slowly
drive away

at last

something
has been verifiably
accomplished
today

something else
that will also
be undone
by tomorrow
