Dogs 2017

THE FAT ONE
(1/24/17)

I know
those eyes

they are
the eyes
of a lover
in perceived
need

he sits
upon his haunches
just a few feet
away

big belly

big balls

he is not
suffering
even though
he attempts
to guilt me
with his gaze

I ask him
what he needs

he turns
slightly
as if indicating
the empty
bird feeder

I take
the feeder
inside

refill it
with seed

with grain

take it
back out
to the yard

hang it
upon the
hook

move away

he approaches
slowly

cautiously

he is waiting
for me
to leave

possibly
not wanting me
to witness
his gluttony

not wanting
to incur
my disapproval

I return
indoors

watching
the squirrel
from a distance

as do
the birds
no doubt

their pecking
order
furred a bit
