Dogs 2017

SPEEDING THROUGH YELLOW
(9/2/17)

I've slowed

I've changed

a wreck
will do that
to a person

that loud
metallic bang

the smell
of the safety
bag

smoke
from somewhere

the ringing
in the head
that doesn't
dissipate

bruised ribs

all combine
to get
one's attention

the light
up ahead
is beginning
to change

I apply
the brake
as the car
behind me
switches lanes

rushes
around me

makes it through
the intersection
just
as the red light
begins to glow

I've lost
only seconds
by stopping

but I understand
his manic urge
to keep moving

I hope
that he makes
good time

but I think
I'll see him
again
at the next
stoplight

at least
he'll be ahead
of me
