Dogs 2017

ORDINARY ENTROPY
(12/27/17)

I leave
the office
infrequently
for necessary
errands

to dentists

to doctors

not much
else

I am
always amazed
by the amount
of traffic
in the middle
of a workday

I understand
the service

the delivery
vehicles

I understand
that a small
percentage
will be
in my category

but what
of the vast
majority
of remaining
vehicles?

where
are they going
in the middle
of the morning?

what
are they doing
in the middle
of the afternoon?

don't they
have jobs?

perhaps
they are
shift workers

I look
in the cars
about me

more of a
shiftless
quality
is apparent

is this
where my
tax dollars
go?

to keep
these people
out driving

smoking

drinking

shopping?

maybe
they are all
wealthy

can afford
such diversions
without
subsidies

I think
not
however

at times
in my past
I was out
amongst them

I recognize
their appearances
from my own
remembered reflections
in the rear view

I know
that they are
wandering

searching

seizing
the days
in their own
twisted ways

I miss
those times

those days
when I felt
as if I was
doing something

something
really
important

something
necessary

by doing
absolutely
nothing
at all
