Dogs 2017

DRESSING COUPE
(9/12/17)

I pull in
behind
a fancy looking car
doing about 45
in a 35

we make
good time
for about two
miles
before we are
stifled
by the slower
commuting traffic

then
a stoplight

he begins
thrashing
about
as if
he were being
attacked

twisting

contorting

good God

he's in
a car

can't he just
drive?

the light changes

the car in front
of him
takes off

but he's
more concerned
apparently
with pulling off
his shirt

maybe
he has
ants

just
as I'm about
to honk
he looks up

floors it

weaving
erratically
from one lane boundary
to the other

I am now
trapped
behind him

he decides
to take off
his seat belt
to facilitate
the changing
process

the shirt
is finally free

discarded
into the back
seat

now
to put on
the new
one

at any
given moment
he's either
dangerously close
to riding
the sidewalk
or sided swiping
the vehicle
in the next
lane

at least
he's going fast

at one point
he has
the new shirt
completely covering
his head
trying to snake
his arms through
to pull it
down

amazing

how we're not
all
in a 20 car
pileup
as a result
is a miracle

his head
is now visible
again

I gratefully
turn
into my neighborhood

fleeing

before
he starts
on his pants
