Dogs 2016

CROWDED TROUGH
(1/10/17)

I put
the feeder out
every winter

primarily
for the pair
of breeding cardinals
that nest
in the bushes
next
to my house

they
are beautiful
birds

I enjoy
watching
them

watching them
raise their young
in the spring

but
in the lean season
their other feathered
neighbors

some of the
furred ones

do not know
that the grains

that the seeds

are reserved

I look out
at times
to see dozens
of sparrows

finches

nuthatches
et al

as well
as a few
hungry squirrels

maybe
a mouse
or two

feeding
voraciously
upon the provided
fodder

I'll hear
the cardinals
scolding
unseen
from a distance

or one
of them
will perch upon
the shepherd's hook
from whence
the feeder
hangs

looking
down
upon the melee
in confused
despair

my best
intentions
undone

nature
apparently
has other plans
for my attempt
to upset
the natural
order

I turn
away
from the window

wonder
what's
in the fridge

happier
than usual
to be
alone
