Dogs 2017

AGENT OF NATURAL SELECTION
(7/15/17)

I see
the glow
of the eyes
first

then
the face
of a baby opossum
in the headlights

then I hear
the tires grind
the little marsupial
into the pavement

all
in the tick
of a second

going 45 mph
doesn't give one
much time to adjust
in the predawn
lighting

first
of course
I'm sad
for such
a senseless
death

sad
that a wild creature
doesn't have
much chance
in the city

then I wonder
why it's there
in the first place

the river
only a mile
and a half
away

bad parenting
perhaps

finally
I hope
that it didn't
mess up
my car

and that
larger wheels
aren't coming
my way
today
