Dogs 2017

A FINE BALANCE
(6/15/17)

the young
mockingbird
teeters
on the fence
top

not knowing
much

but understanding
that I may be
the enemy

it chirps
a loud warning
while attempting
to stay upright

all fluff
and attitude

a bluffing
bravado
to give the
uncertain
a cause
for hesitation

finally
as I draw
near

the wings
extend

using
their few feathers
in a fluttering
escape
to the neighbor's
backyard

the little
bird is lucky
that I am
no killer

a true
hunter
would've silenced
that squawk
with quick
decisive
action

life
for us all
seems mostly
a matter
of luck

I head
quickly
indoors

before
I lose
mine
