Dogs 2016

STUTTER
(9/18/16)

he was
brilliant
already in high
school

he was also
a quiet

pleasant

unassuming

ungainly
looking fellow
with a very slight
speech impediment
that made him
target
of many
an ignorant
teenage mocking

we should've
been friends

but I distanced
myself
in my pathetic
attempts
to hang with
what I thought
a cooler crowd

I mocked him
out his earshot
(being basically
a coward)
for the only
time
in response
to a science teacher's
hesitation
in class
one day

a teacher
who immediately

unceremoniously

upbraided me
for my unthinking
spontaneous impersonation
of one
of his favorites

I deserved it

I had intended
to apologize
to my fellow
student
afterward

but as usual
avoided any such
uncomfortable
encounters

I don't know
what
caused me
to think of him
this morning

but out
of curiosity
I search his
name
on the internet

he's now
on the staff
of a prestigious
East Coast university
and director
of one of their
major
medical units

I had heard
some years ago
that he had earned
additional doctorates
along with his MD
before taking charge
of an emergency
clinic there

I'm glad
that he made
the most
of his many
talents

I'm glad
that any
high school insults
didn't hamper him
a bit

I type this
as I sit
on Sunday morning
in the office
of a failing
company

desperately
looking
for some answers
to our downward
slide

karma
is a tricky
thing

but it's nice
finally to have
the opportunity
to say

I'm sorry
Walter
