SOLSTICE STING
(6/16/16)

heat
lends import
to the least
consequential
of tasks

the world
appearing more
intense
through sweat
stung
eyes

even
as we practice
the most mundane
of matters

mowing
the yard

washing
the car

walking
the dog

summer
seems to give us
more focus

we wonder
of those
at war
in desert climes

fully
loaded uniforms
hindering all
cooling
opportunities

bullets

bombs

and the
incessant
sun

all raising
temperatures
of soldiers
in those
far flung
foreign locales

beyond anything
that we would
ever experience

they get
no relief

they need
no added
purpose

when we're
too hot

we walk
back inside
wearing shorts

sandals

reaching
for the
thermostat
in relief

grateful
that their
strength
supports our
weakness
