SLIME AND RELEASE
(5/17/16)

first one
at the office
each morning

I am able
to witness
the various and sundry
creepy crawlies
that have sought
shelter
from the cold

the wet

the heat

during the
dark hours

this morning
I discover
a slug

a gelatinous
creature
as long

as thick

as my middle
finger

undulating along
the carpet

I could
just step
on it

wipe it up

toss
the remains

but early
in the day

alone

I tend
to be
a bit more
pro life

I don't want
to tempt
any oozing
so attempt
to coax
the creature
onto
a paper towel

the going
is slow

I see the
antennae retract
with every shift
of the temporary
conveyance

a certain
sheen
begins to coat
the body

this could
get ugly

finally
with more than half
of the length
on the towel

I lift

head quickly
for the exit

out into
the predawn
mist

over
the wet
dirt

I try
to shake
the slug free

but it clings
tenaciously

finally
I grasp
the gooey
gastropod

feel the slippery
excretion
as I free it

then set
the now curling
creature
upon
the damp ground

go back
inside

hoping
that it finds
its way

anxious
to wash
my hands

wondering who
my witnesses
might be

praying
that they'll be
as merciful
with me
