Dogs 2016

RAKING IN THE DARK
(12/6/16)

the endeavor
seems
a bit ridiculous
on this still
temperate evening

cars slow
as they pass

pedestrians
shout
their humorous
remarks

lighted
neighborhood windows
fill with faces
to see
what the fuss
is all about

two hours
and eight
body-sized
leaf bags
later

the job
is done

tomorrow morning
the brisk north wind
will validate
tonight's
effort

and although
I saved the neighbors
to the south
from my leaves

they'll
never appreciate
the gesture

they'll just
laugh
at the old man
stumbling around
in the darkness

wondering
what he might
be thinking

"who uses
a rake
these days
anyway?"
