PUSHING DIMES
(12/17/16)

our market
is slow

damned
slow

every
dollar

every
cent

is critical

making
payroll
is an ordeal

we spread
the bills
before us

wondering
which
can wait

which
have to be
paid

the keys
to the office
still work

the lights
still glow

the phones
occasionally
ring

and we still
have coffee

thank God
for coffee

ten cents
used to buy
a cup
in a diner
years ago

we've
turned back
the calendar
with the cheap
stuff
that we make

it's hot

it's black

it gives
the needed
kick
to motor
through
another futile
sales attempt

but no one
at Starbucks
would recognize
the aroma

would hazard
a taste

we
low rent
our way
through another
day

thankful
at least
to be warm

wide awake
