IN ONE EAR
(1/30/16)

we never
know
what will
impress

what will
insult

what will
stick with someone
for years

what will
be forgotten
in the next
moment

the same
words spoken
may have entirely
different effects
upon different
people

or upon
the same person
at different
times

we seem
to hear
what we expect
to hear

voices jumbled
through a filter
of emotional

of psychological
bias

or blocked
entirely
while we distractedly
anticipate answers

responses

to questions
unasked

statements
undeclared

we forget
to exist within
the conversation

echoing
our thoughts
in caves
of ego

until
there is no
point
in saying
anything
anymore

our cups
are full

we depart
in silence
still talking
to each other
