FIRE FOLLOWER
(3/20/16)

the Sunday morning
streets
are filled
with the typical
Sunday morning
drivers

no one
in a hurry

no one
else
going to work
apparently

I weave
through the slower
of the slow

thinking
unholy thoughts
on this day
of worship

then I see
the lights

hear
the sirens

fire trucks
approaching fast
from behind

I pull
to the curb
bemoaning
another delay

but as
they pass
I floor it

motoring
at the same
speed

a safe distance
back
of course

they trigger
the traffic lights
ahead of me
turning my route
into a surface street
expressway

they divert
at the interstate
just a block
beyond
my own
final turn

I make it
to the office
in record
time

I get out
of the car
feeling most
pleased

even though
I know
I've benefitted
from some other's
suffering

lives
are being altered
for the worst
as I turn
the key

as I make
coffee

as I settle
into my own
safe and selfish
morning

I have
a nonemergency job
to do

thankfully
