Dogs 2016

BACK IN THE BAR
(11/21/16)

the scene
really hasn't changed
that much
in the last
16 plus years

the people
do seem younger
due my advancing
age

and there's no
smoky reminder
of the tarred
and nicotined
past

but
the same
hope

the same
hopelessness

that I remember
so well

is masked
upon the faces
of the inebriants

I am there
for the latter
case

the crowd
parts
at hardwood's
end
as I approach

they sense
my purpose

I see
him there

dazed

incoherent

I help
him
to his feet

some sottish
Samaritans
help
along the way

I had forgotten
the drunken
camaraderie
of lost souls

once out
into the cool
night air
he seems
to revive
a bit

"ready
to go home?"

I ask

"home"

he says

"home"

he repeats

as if
the word
would summon
sanctuary
