AGE APPROPRIATE
(5/31/16)

there
comes a time
when the mirror
no longer stands
as an accurate
gauge
for what
is socially
acceptable

we seem
not able
to take into account
the accumulated calendars
in respect
to our own
reflections

we still see
the same person
we have always
seen

so
when judging
whether or not
an item of
clothing

a hairstyle

an automobile

would be
a proper match

we are better
served
to look
to our peers
for visual
confirmation

my standard
is an old man
down the street

actually
only a few years
older than I

who flirts
frequently
with the line
of decorum

if I can't
imagine him
sporting
a recent trend

I know
that it is not
for me

the question
is not one
of looking young
to feel young

the question
is standing out

becoming
an obvious target
of skewed
perception

we have reached
the maturity
to fade
into the background

but it's difficult
to fade
wearing
aloha shirts

severely dyed
hair

or driving
a flashy
convertibles

give
it up

youthful appearance
atrophies
to ridiculousness
outside
of that quickly
diminishing
window of time

death
is the only
ageless
fashion
