SINKING NOONS
(9/16/15)

mid September

the sun
no longer
reaches
as high
in the sky

hot
southerly winds
turn to cooler
breezes
from the north

birds
and animals
become more active
in anticipation
of the equinox

their bones
resonate
with the coming
change

we think
of jackets
as we stifle
a few shivers
in the mornings
even though
the calendar
still says
summer

soon
the streets
running east
to west
will be blazing
rivers
at sunrise

at sunset

we'll shield
our teary
eyes
knowing
that our daylight
diminishes

knowing
that the night
will soon again
rule
our lives
