SIDEWALKS
(1/9/15)

cement paths
laid
for our perambulatory
pleasure

seemingly
unforgiving surfaces
but over time
the local flora
exposes
any openings
permitted
to the earth

miniature
terrariums
spring forth
from the cracks
and crevices
showing that life
always
finds a way
to flourish
despite
our unnatural
machinations

there's something
so human
in the vulnerability
of such
otherwise
forbidding constructs

if these
hardened slabs
submit
so easily
to decay
what chance
do our soft bodies
have
upon this
planet?

we mourn
continually
for the walkways
of ourselves

as the newly
poured
will weep
eventually
for their own
decay
