PERIPHERY
(11/18/15)

we make
so many judgments
based upon
the smallest
amount
of information

we let
the least
of glimpses

reflections

shadows

determine
our daily
decisions

we use
the memory
of past events
to fill in
the gaps created
by any current
cursory
investigation

why really
look
when so much
never changes?

our margins
for error
seem
a wide path

we dismiss
so much
of what
we sense

it's this
lapse
in attention
that causes
errors

accidents

misunderstandings

or at least
allows them
to happen

but there's
too much
to take in

we would
all be insane
if we focused upon
every minute
detail

every minute
of the day

however
our sanity seems
to fall far short
of the minimum
amount of thought
needed to decide
how to direct
our here and now
actions

some middle
ground
of awareness
must be gained

but we seem
to motor on
haphazardly

barely acknowledging
all the cars
passing
so quickly by

searching only
for a space
in the traffic
toward which
to speed

hoping
for the best
