Dogs 2014

WINTER COAT
(10/30/14)

I wear
the skins
of everyone
that I've ever
touched
to insulate me
from further
contact

they are
a full
body callus
that protects
me
from the pain
and anguish
of the human
being

you may
want
to keep
your distance

I shall only
take
from you
to further
my isolation

I shall only
add
to this misanthropic
cocoon
at your
expense

yes
I smile
as I see you
approach

do not
mistake
this usually friendly
gesture
as a welcoming sign
of companionship
or compassion

my mouth
merely waters
at the thought
of devouring
your fragilities
to strengthen
my own
solo stance

I sleep
quite comfortably
at night

warmed
by the weakness
of those whom
reach out
to me

I pull
their hides
up closely
to my chin

and dream
of a day
on the beach
