Dogs 2014

WALKING THE DOG
(9/6/14)

the first
time
that I saw
them
the two Labs
ran up to me
sniffed the air
and the black
one
hesitantly
allowed me
to briefly
pet her

at arm's
distance

the young woman
angrily called
her animals
back

the next
time
the yellow one
wanted to be
petted
as well

I was bookended
by the two
leaning into me
to get equal
shares
of attention

in the distance
she yelled
for them
to come

reluctantly
they left me
to my solo
venture

the third
time
they sprinted
to me

rolled
upon their backs
at my feet

offering
thier undersides

I muttered
quiet
endearments
and scratched
both bellies
as they whined
with pleasure

the bitches
were mine

across the way
she was really
upset

screaming
their names

glaring
at me
as if
I had stolen
her children

finally
I stopped
and resumed
my route
as they loped
slowly back
toward their owner
who was shouting
reprimands

my luck
with four-legged
females
has always
been magical

a laid back
relaxed
demeanor
always attracts
them

the bipedal
variety
seem to disdain
my lack
of drive
and ambition

I walked
on

alone
