SMUDGE IN THE SKY
(10/8/14)

I remember
the first
lunar eclipse
that I viewed
as a child

I was
disappointed

I had
expected
an extraordinary
white to black
transformation

what I saw
was a muted
expression
of the everyday

my father
explained
the blood moon
concept
but that
did little
to alleviate
the fact
that I felt
duped

this morning
the eclipsed orb
coincided
with my drive
to work

about
30 degrees
or so
above
the horizon

I had
good vantage
despite the predawn
morning glare
of the city
lights

aside
from an ambulance

a couple of
fire trucks

and several
squad cars
along the way
there seemed
no portents
of doom

ho hum

simply
another shaded
occasion
for this
graying
existence
