Dogs 2014

SEASONAL HUMANITY
(5/24/14)

twice
a year
I play
the game

how long
can I go
before turning on
the heater

the air conditioner?

I think
of the billions
in the world
who
do not
have that
option

I think
of the millions
in this country
who have
no access
to a thermostat

I freeze

I bake

thinking
this
is what it is
to be alive

suffering
the seasons
like the rest
of Earth's
inhabitants

finally
in the
late Fall
I'll stoke up
the fireplace
for a few
weeks

I'll rationalize
that man
has made fire
for millennia

that humans
everywhere
are warming themselves
by this method
at the same
time
as I

in the
late Spring
I'll use
a fan
for as long
as possible
knowing that
technically
I've already
given in
to technology

the breaking
point
is always
sleep

when
I cannot sleep
because
of the temperature
I will
capitulate

freezing
feet

sweating
brow

I will bail
for the buttons
every time

hoping
that the machine
still works

hoping
that the artificial
air
doesn't weaken
me
any more
than I already
am

then sitting
temperately comfortable
in my living room
watching
the bushman
on National
Geographic

later
dreaming comfortably
in bed

dreaming
of lions
gnawing easily
upon my softened
bones
