Dogs 2014

RAINY NIGHT RUSH HOUR
(12/4/14)

I love
it

a reanimation
of the routine

the conditions
have made
the usual monotony
of the evening
commute
a bit more
magical

lights
haloed
by the drops
on the windshield
seem to come
from every
direction

lanes
that looked
so spacious
in dry daylight
now seem narrowed
in the nighttime

obscured
by the glaring
of wet surfaces

interrupted
by the distracting
rhythm
of the wipers

I motor
on
nonetheless

maintaining
both speed
and aggressive
tendencies

the altered
environment
has attuned
my attention
and reflexes

I am again
a driving
machine

I realize
that I am also
forced to trust
the other drivers
to be focused
as well

not to be
confused
by the conditions

intimidated
by reduced
margins
for error

I have
to hope
that they remain
between
their lines

that they
do
the right
thing

that they stay
out
of my way

I lean
on the accelerator
and rush on
through
the darkness

not caring
if I make it
home
