Dogs 2014

OPEN WIDE
(11/13/14)

they have
over the years
built a city
in my mouth

a mini
metropolis
of metal
amalgam
and porcelain

while I
reclined
in dental chairs
far and wide
they deliberately
and exactingly
installed
these artificial
constructs
with the greatest
of care

unfortunately
they were erected
on top
of my oh
so human
foundations
of crumbling
enamel
and shifting
pulp

their
urban teethlines
now need
to be underpinned
or replaced
entirely

no matter
to them

more pain
and bills
for me

I may travel
south
of the border

find a backstreet
dental magician
who will remove
everything
and give me
a shining
new pair
of economical
choppers

etch
an epitaph
of my choice
across the
front most
whiteness

so that
I may smile
a resigned
message
of dissatisfaction
at the fragilities
of mankind
