Dogs 2014

NO HALLOWED GROUND
(6/5/14)

I spend
my days
treading upon
the streets

the sidewalks

the manicured
landscapes

upon
the unholy
veneer
of human
vicissitude

hoping
that one day
my feet
will sink
through the shit
to the level
of true
surface

uncontaminated
by man

but there
always seems
to be
concrete

metal

or deconstructed
timber
beneath

I remember
walking across
a frozen
Bering Sea

so substantial
in its
impermanence

so pristine
in its
dazzling
brightness

so endless
in its
stretch
to the horizon

I truly
felt to be
on a sacred
plateau

then
I looked
down
and wondered
at the pollutants
interlaced
in the ice

every
church
has its
sewer

every alter
its dried
blood

if we
are there

if we
have been
there

sanctity
no longer
lives
