Dogs 2014

NATURAL ORDER
(12/1/14)

a late
Fall front
is moving
through

shifting winds
from South
to North

warm
to cool

the sun
is still shining
however
so I walk
on this Sunday
to enjoy
the seasonally rare
daylight

at the runoff
retention area
that is my destination
I hear my friends
the crows

always
six of them
so I assume
they are
the same group
each time

today oddly
they all caw
hysterically

just
as I spot them
in the surrounding
trees
they take flight

I count
seven birds
this time

seeing
that the seventh
is much larger

much more
graceful
than those
of black plumage

it's
a hawk

and they
are pestering
it away
from their
territory

taking turns
diving upon
the normally
superior avian
that screeches
its annoyance

I watch
them
chase it
toward
the northern horizon
then resume
my walk

perhaps
five minutes
later
the crows
return

quiet now
except
for the leader

issuing instructions

or possibly
praise

they land
in the grassy
depression
and begin foraging
as if
no battle
had ever
taken place

they are again
their strutting
curious
comical selves

but the largest
keeps an eye
on me
as I circle
them

in case
I become
a nuisance
to their
majority
as well
