Dogs 2014

MASTERPIECE
(10/13/14)

he bought
the framed
picture
at a thrift
store

it showed
a young
couple
on an urban
street

the scene
reminded him
of a more
abstract

impressionistic

version
of "The Freewheelin'
Bob Dylan"
album cover

he saw
what looked
like actual
brushstrokes

something
about it
appealed
to him

when he
got it home
and on
a wall
he noticed
a slight smudge
to the right
of the woman

so he
took it
down

disassembled
the frame

and inspected
the defect

it didn't seem
so much
like a smudge
but a worn
spot

wearing
through
to earthen tones
beneath

he rubbed
a bit
with
a wet
cloth

there seemed
to be a landscape
there

he obliterated
the couple
revealing
the skeletal remains
of a human
in the desert

now bordered
by the remaining
cityscape
on the perimeter

the montage
slightly whispered
"reality"
to him

he rummaged
though
a desk door
to find a black
marker

he scrawled
"remember"
in lower case
across the center
to approximate
the subtleness
of what
he had heard

reframed
and rehung
the result

never
to see
his world
the same
