LIVESTOCK GRIDLOCK
(7/22/14)

I live
near
the fairgrounds
in this Midwestern
city

for every
state fair

every
horse
cattle
farm and ranch
show

they come

driving
huge pickups

pulling
huge trailers

filled
with huge
animals

many
from out
of town
and unsure
at times
of the route

often making
last second
turns

lane changes

affecting
all traffic
around them
with their unwieldy
vehicles

often
affecting
me

today
on the way
home
from work
one of these
encumbrances
occurred
right
on my route

a twin cab
dual rear-wheeled
pickup
had somehow
maneuvered
a long trailer
crosswise
across two lanes
of traffic
also blocking
a left turn lane

blocking me
from my
precious
left turn

I muttered
profanities
ready to lay
on the horn
when a horse
popped his head
out
of a trailer window
not 12 feet
from me

he looked
around

curious
of his
surroundings

seeming
to enjoy
the cooler
than normal
temperature

the unusual
light rain
in July

he began
to vigorously
nod his head
up and
down

as if
in agreement
with the weather

with the mob
of cars
containing
their mobs
of people

with
this life
in general

I forgot
about
the traffic jam
momentarily
and talked
to the animal
through the passenger
window

he nodded
at me
as well

the horse
seemed smart enough
being happy
just to be
there

I relented
and nodded
back

the light
turned green
and the perceived
problem
was resolved

the dampened
mane
continuing to flop
upon that muscular neck
as they drove
down
the street

it was
going
to be
a good night
