Dogs 2014

IMPERFECT SAVIOR
(7/2/14)

there
it waited

a fuzzy
barely feathered
clump
of baby bird

wings
undeveloped
it had apparently
fallen
from a nest
in the overhanging
magnolia
on this very
windy day

I looked
down
where it sat
in the street

initially
I wanted
to take it
home with
me

who wouldn't?

but honestly
I wasn't up
to the kind
of care
that would involve

the only
vet rescue
open this time
of night
was 15 miles
away

at 7pm
on a Friday
I was just
too damned tired
for that type
for round trip
madness

life
is survival
of the fittest
after all

this
little shit
was evidently
part
of the winnowing
process

waiting
wide eyed
but silent
for what fate
determined
as I contemplated
my pending
action

my lack
thereof

I searched
the tree
but saw no evidence
of sanctuary

I could
walk away
and let Nature
take its course

the kindest
option
would probably
be
to crush it
beneath
a tennis
shoe

abating
further misery

no one
the wiser

instead
I picked up
the now cheeping
preavian
from the concrete
and laid it
at the base
of the trunk
where a few rocks
and undergrowth
offered
some concealment

as I did
two adult
birds

(don't ask
me
what kind)

swooped
past my head
in frenetic
fashion

good

they
could now
decide whether
to aid
or abandon
their offspring

I felt
relieved
of responsibility
for that
impending
death

I resumed
my walk
in preparation
for my
own
