FATAL FOOTFALL
(8/8/14)

some days
are like
this

Death
is in every
step

every one
is one step
less

I look
around
and gauge
objects

animals

people

attempting
to ascertain
what will still
be here
after I'm gone

the streets

most trees

most houses

most children
as adults

not
individual birds
squirrels
dogs or cats

but their
progeny
will live on
to populate
the same yards

the same branches

in fact
most
of what I see
will look
much the same
even long after
my passing

there's
a comfort
in that thought
of continuity

a terror
that all of this
will exist
just fine
without me

I hear
a crunch
and look
down
to see
a smashed
beetle

I walk
on

waiting
for my own
final shadow
to fall
