Dogs 2014

DEMO DERBY ESCAPEE
(2/8/14)

the car
turned left
from a side
street
chugging right up
next to me
on the main
avenue

it was
6am

there was
no one
ahead
of us

no one
behind

yet
the driver
couldn't wait
for me to pass
before pulling
out

I slowed
to let it
get ahead
and got my
first
good look

battered
and beaten
from every
angle

rust

dings

dents

smoke

cracked
windshield

rear bumper
bungeed
to the truck
lid

what
a fucking
mess

no wonder
they didn't mind
darting
into traffic

darting
into me

the wreck
began to
slow
so I zipped
on past

I checked
the rear view
and watched
that disaster
actually take
the entrance
ramp
to the expressway

at least
both headlights
were working

what
a life
that must
be

I remember
that life
from my not
too recent
past

that high paced
desperate
ineptitude
for living

what the
hell

their car
started

it ran

they had
as much right
as me
to go wherever
they wanted

they were
smart
however
to keep their
commute hidden
in the dark

I understood
that
as well

we were
kindred
pre-dawn demons
