Dogs 2014

DARKENED JOY
(11/14/14)

they're
the same
laments
every fall

coming to work
in the dark

going home
in the dark

the only daylight
sensed
being filtered
through office
windows

deflation

depression

they mope
their daily
rounds

I smile
secretly
at their
discomfort

I am perfectly
in my element
during these seemingly
perpetual
nights

I remember
the actual
occurrences
in the Arctic
with fondness

when the skies
were clear
the mid-day stars
seemed
to brush my face
like a mother
comforting
her child

the city lights
now block
that feeling
of familiarity

but I know
that Mom
is there
all the same
