Dogs 2014

COFFEE PLEASE
(3/27/14)

to hide out
in a sandwich
shop
on a late
Thursday afternoon
while the workday
hysteria
scurries frantically
beyond the windows
seems like
a major accomplishment
somehow

I cannot
explain
why I've been
graced
with these moments
of peace
and sanctuary

warm

well fed

relatively
pain free

I don't even
mind
that this steaming
black beverage
is served
in Styrofoam

it's just
me

one other
taciturn
diner

and an unconcerned
counter staff

in this relaxed
cushion
between lunch
and the evening
rush

no one
else
knows
that I'm here

I am isolated

immune

from the capricious
nature
of civilization

at least
for this short
time

I know
that it can't
last

so being
basically
a coward

I stand

then
move up front
for another
cup

hoping

for some
caffeinated
courage
