A DAY BEHIND
(9/25/14)

I look
at the work
in front
of me

I look
at the calendar
behind me

I don't
know why

paper
and print
are not
my problem

I
am my
problem

lack
of effort
seems
the obvious
culprit

but the
source
lies
much deeper

a prima facie
absurd schedule
colored
by my complicity
seems the canvas
beneath
so many layers
of misplaced
brushstrokes

it sits

it waits

determining
my days

disturbing
my nights

a ridiculous
spreadsheet

rows leading to
columns
of empty
failure

I shake
my head

stare
down
at my desk

the phone
rattles me
to now

delivering
an unscheduled
call

after
a deep sigh

I answer
