Dogs 2013

MERGE
(7/12/13)

he knew
that it
would happen

it always does

at the last
possible second
someone
approached rapidly
in the soon
to be barricaded
left lane

then tried
to edge right
into the only
open
northbound lane

right
in front
of him

he had
moved over
a quarter mile
back
as instructed
by the many
warning signs

joining
the slow
single file procession
as it approached
the construction
ahead

he held
his ground
but the Jeep
(he greatly
disliked Jeeps)
kept edging
closer

then it
happened

fender
met fender
and honking
and yelling
ensued
from the other
driver

he sat
there

still

silent

looking
in the rear view
at all the traffic
stacked behind
them

he had
committed
to himself
some time ago
to ease up
in traffic

not to sweat
a few extra
seconds
here and there

but now
he had
no patience
for those who acted
as he
once did

he sat
some more
waiting
for the Jeep
to back away
but only
the honking
and yelling
continued

joined
by the honking
and yelling
from those
now blocked

he sat

he sat

then he
stomped
on the accelerator
and turned the wheel
hard left

the force
pushed the Jeep
over
into oncoming
traffic
where it was
hit
a few seconds
later
smashing
the bothersome
vehicle
but unhooking it
from his fender

he had
just cleared
enough space
to allow the vehicles
behind him
to slowly pass

of course
now
the wreck
involving the Jeep
had stopped
all
southbound
traffic

he flipped on
his right turn
indicator
and began
to look
for an opening

easing
over

hoping
that someone
would let him
back in line
so that he
could get home
on time

"don't
be late
tonight"

was the last
thing
she had said
to him
