Dogs 2013

HOMESUMMING
(3/5/13)

you expect
some magic

some feeling
of connection

something
out of the ordinary
when you return
to the land
of your birth

as if
the earth itself
will recognize you

show
you a sign
of welcoming

but
you arrive
and nothing
speaks
to you

you walk
the village
streets

look at
buildings
where you held
your mother's
hand
to enter

stand
in front
of houses
where your family
once lived

visit
graves
of relatives
remembered
from youth

silence

silence
and strangers
wherever
you look

time seems
so much
more important
than place

but
no clock
can take
you back

so many
decades
have passed
that no tears
drop
for a childhood
gone

you drive
to the only
convenience store
remaining
in town

fill the tank

pay an outrageous
price
for fuel

then return
to the city
of your current
residence
before
you are forgotten
there
as well

where
at least
the boss
and the bill
collectors
still know
your name
