Dogs 2013

EF5
(5/21/13)

after the
"tornado
of a lifetime"
in '99
I thought
that we would
be safe
for the foreseeable
future

damaged
but not
destroyed
we rebuilt

the twister
of 2003
missed us

barely

my wife
wanted
to leave
but I convinced
her to stay

I grew
up
here

my friends
and family
are here

I wanted
the same
feeling
of community
for my kids

ten years
later
I drive through
the debris field
that was
my neighborhood

my last
words to her
over the phone

"get in
the hall closet
and you'll
be fine

it'll be
over
in no time"

I had
told her
earlier
that our youngest
would be safer
at his school
than at
home

now
our house
is gone

the school
is gone

so are they

the other son
and daughter
are on their way
to their grandparents

my wife's
parents

in Oregon

"what's
the worst
that will happen
to us there?"

I remember
her asking
in '03

"we get
moldy
from all
the rain?"

~

I'll stay
here

keep
one eye
to the familiar
sky

dig through
the rubble

and bury
my tears
