Dogs 2013

ANAL SEEPAGE
(4/2/13)

I picked
the shortest
checkout lane
with my
one item

usually
a mistake
but the couple
ahead of me
seemed
almost done

the cashier
was chatting
with the wife

the husband
standing down
by the bagboy
commiserating
in silence

"then he
told me
that I'd have
to find another
place
to live"

the cashier
was telling
the woman

"oh my

that's awful"

the wife
replied

they must
know each other
I thought
for the women
to be sharing
such intimate
information

they continued
the conversation
in the same vein
as the items
dwindled

the cashier
stopping
with each new
revelation

minutes
dying
slow little
deaths

"alright...

Mrs. Henderson"

the cashier said
reading the name
from the register
receipt

"have
a nice day!"

so much
for being
acquainted

the amount
of personal information
exchanged
by strangers
staggers me

we
can't seem
to help
ourselves

it oozes
from our
pores

this overwhelming
need
to be understood

finally
it's my
turn

"did you find
everything
you needed
sir?"

she asks

tears still
welled
in her
eyes
