Dogs 2012

WALKING EMPTY
(11/12/12)

needing
to work

not
wanting
to work

just wanting
to live

the door
slams
on another
interview

disappointing

discouraging

depressing

but not
disastrous

back out
on the sidewalk

bright sunshine

a gentle breeze

while his
interviewer
is trapped
in fluorescent
lighting

breathing
stale air

he feels
a bit sorry
for that office-bound
prisoner
of society's
mores

outside
he's connected
again

all
that traffic

all that
activity

faceless
cars
and buildings
bustling with validation
of his
disenfranchisement

he registers
only
the other
pedestrians

the other people
out and about
for reasons
unknown
or
for no reason
whatsoever

he doesn't
care why

he enjoys
the fact
that they
are there

he isn't
the only one
without a place
to be
at that particular
moment

he knows
that winter
is coming soon
and that being
out of doors
will certainly
not be
the optimal
situation

but today
the Fall skies
are kind

life is easy

if only
he could convince
his girlfriend
of this fact
when she
gets home
this evening

"any luck
today?"

she'll ask

then look
deflated
when he responds
in the negative

of course
she's tired
from working
all day

she'll
never understand
the spiritually
of his
insanity
