Dogs 2012

THE DRUNK BOYS
(2/21/12)

sequestered
in a motel room
in between
family visits
I enjoy
the anonymity
of an out
of towner

just
after midnight
they come

post adolescents
yelling
running
screaming
laughing
fighting
cursing

flooding
the hallway
with their
imbibed
enthusiasm
for life

I give up
the notion
of sleep

turn on
the bedside
lamp

the Weather
Channel

while
I have
things to do
tomorrow
none wreaks
of revenue
or responsibility

I too
once polluted
the hallways
in the
wee hours

this
was my
payback

at 2am
however
I dial
the desk
and demand
silence

at 2:05
the noise
abates

my penitence
had been
paid

off
with the TV

off
with the light

in
the dark
I envy
their
exuberance

I miss
mine

I pity
their
destined
hangovers

missing those
not
so much
