Dogs 2012

THE DEAR AND ANTELOPE
(6/25/12)

driving
down
out of the Rockies
early
in the morning
I see many
white tail
and pronghorn
in the meadows
and along
the highway
foraging
in the cooler
hours

I have
just left
my father
and stepmother
and am
on the way
home
to my wife
and step
son

I see
the huge
eyes
of the animals
along the way
and wonder
when I last
saw such
deep
soulful
gazes upon
a human
countenance

certainly
not
at either
end
of today's
journey

I take
the blame
possibly
not willing
to readjust
my own
misanthropic sights
to allow
for any
preteranthropomorphic
meaning
reflected
in those
closest
to me

I look
forward
to the open
plains
and higher
temperatures
of the coming
afternoon

when
the only
soulless stare
will be
my own

family
and fauna
faded
to the
extremes
