TEMP TO FIRE

she's
about
my age
so no
newcomer
to the labor
market

she
needs
the job

we need
a fully functional
employee

but
there's something
missing

a spark

a fire

a sense
of purpose

she seems
to only want
to serve
her time
8 to 5
Monday
through Friday
without much concern
for the work
in front
of her

I've trained
so many
and have
sharpened
my perception
over the years
to detect
who will last

who will contribute

and who

will not

she
unfortunately
will not

in the past
I would press
the training
for weeks
even months
in anticipation
of seeing
some crystalline
precipitation
of understanding
gently fall
across
her countenance

but
those latent
occurrences
have been practically
non existence
and the efforts
always
wasted

I gave
her only
four days
to show me
something

anything

unfair?

possibly

but the same
methods
and analyses
were used
on another
just one month
prior
and that person
is still at a desk
in our offices

some simply
do not have
the deportment
for such
a position

maybe
I have done
her
a favor

perhaps
she will
blossom
at the next
opportunity

all very
rational
suppositions
that do little
to assuage
the death
of today's hope
for both
of us
