Dogs 2012

MUCH LAUGHTER
(10/31/12)

I have
a rigid
work schedule
which I follow
religiously
right up
until the time
that I power up
my computer
to open emails
and key in
my code
to check phone
messages

my itinerary
is suddenly
sent straight
to Hell
while my chair
has yet
to warm

I am then
at the mercy
of requests
complaints
orders
and invoices
from Malaysia
Bahrain
the UK
and Connecticut

all those
ahead of this
North American
Central Daylight/Standard
time
who have
determined
my business
long before
I unlocked
the office door

later
the rest
of America
awakes
and I am flooded
with domestic
concerns

a multitude
of moving
targets
which are
at best
wounded
and slowed
only marginally so
for thoughtful
consideration

my inbox
mocks
my inability
to make any
progress
on tasks awaiting
from the previous
day
week
month
year and decade

what's not
done today
is likely to be
buried
in the growing
pile
of things
left
undone

a parchment
tombstone
marking
the grave
of my impotent
efforts

it's rather
ridiculous
but I've grown
accustomed
to such
madness

most days
I do manage
to meet
my appointment
to laugh
at my plans
a bit before
God
has the chance
