Dogs 2012

MORNING SERVICE
(4/11/12)

she
had been
driving
a bit too fast
for the dark
rainy
conditions

and
of course
running red lights
will catch up
with even
the luckiest
of us

a GMC
pickup
caught the
left rear fender
spun her
a time
and a half
into a third vehicle
and the entire
motored mass
came to rest
in front
of the Faithland
Baptist Church

Early Sunday Worship
9:15 am to 10:30 am

they also
came to rest
in front
of me

only
20 yards
or so

blocking
three
and half
of the four lanes
of traffic

I would
be late
to work
but I would be
the only one
to know
the difference

Regular Sunday Worship
10:45 am to 12 Noon

I sat
and watched
as those involved
exited
their vehicles
nobody seeming
that upset

strange

maybe
the precipitation
had dampened
the usual
hostility

no one
appeared
to be injured

I turned
the key
to kill the engine
and cracked
the windows
a bit
to smell
the fresh
morning air
cleared by the evening thunderstorms
and now
calmly guiding
a peaceful
shower

Sunday Evening Worship
5:45 pm to 6:45pm

someone
stuck behind me
honked their horn
a few times
and the
latter victim
of the accident
returned
to their car
to inch it ahead
the required distance
to order to clear
at least
the one lane

now
the hesitation
while the northbound
and southbound
traffic
studied
the one available
clearing
trying to decide
who possessed
the right
of way

my hurry
gone
I let
the oncoming vehicles
go first

more honking
from behind

someone
possibly under
more scrutiny
that I

Wednesday Evening Worship
6:15 pm to 7:15pm

finally
restarted
I slowly pulled
around
the scene

still
no cops
but the rain
had eased
and those involved
seemed to have
the matter
in hand

sobering
to consider
how wrong
all of our
days
could have
begun

another
nanosecond
or mph
might have timed
some personal disaster
for any
of us

we all
proceeded
a bit more cautiously
along
our respective
ways
