Dogs 2012

INSECT SHEPPARD
(9/27/12)

it happens
every time
that it rains
much more
than a drizzle

crickets
come into
the building
to avoid
the shower

I assume

who knows

maybe
they come in
for a
vacation

maybe
they come
in
to die

being
the first one
into the offices
each morning
I am greeted
with this strange
precipitation
phenomenon

not
a hoard
mind you

just several
scattered
here
and there

the first
few times
that I witnessed
this immigration
I figured that
they would find
their own way out
once
the sky had
cleared

unfortunately
I was eventually
confronted
by a collection
of cricket
corpses
littering
the hallway

depressing

now
I attempt
to catch
them indoors
and to release
them out

cricket capture
is a technique
as is anything
else

after
a time
I was able
to trap harmlessly
in my hands
every one
that I spotted

some may be
the same participants
rain after rain

I am not
sure of their
lifespan

or their
homing
habits

perhaps
it is a game
for them

a human
carousel
possibly

I'm not
sure

I do doubt
that I represent
some sort of
rescuing
angel
to them

I am
probably
more of a nuisance
preventing them
from reaching
whatever may be
their instinctual
goals

but still
I feel better
with each one
that I return
to the wild

I wish
them well
as I gently
place them
in the flower
bed

"there
you go"

"go find
your friends"

"don't
get eaten
right away"

I am
a grown
man

in his
50s

and
I am
also

without
a doubt

quite
insane
