Dogs 2012

I REMEMBER*
(2/3/12)

5th grade
Underwood Elementary
Andrews, TX

"I remember
we were flying along
and hit something
in the air..."

for our teacher's
birthday
some of the future
cheerleaders
of America
hypered their way
into planning
a party

"laying here
looking
at the ceiling
someone
lays a sheet
across my chest"

with the help
of other teachers
the gymnasium
was decorated
on the sly
with crepe paper
streamers
balloons
paper plates
plastic forks
spoons
cake
and ice cream

"something warm
is flowing down
my fingers
pain
is flowing
all through my back"

at
the designated time
the librarian
called for her
over the PA
and she asked
the instructor
next door
(a co-conspirator)
to keep an eye
on us
as she walked
to the library

"I try to move
my arm
and there's no feeling
and when I look
I see there's
nothing there"

en masse
we rush
to the gym
and of course
she comes back
a bit upset
to find her classroom
empty
and confused
when she's told
where
we were

"the face
beside me
stopped bleeding
the girl I knew
has such
a distant stare"

when
she rushes
through the door
of the darkened basketball/
volleyball/
dodgeball court
the music
and an intense
strobe light
begin

"then I look
straight
at the attendant
his face
is pale
as it can be"

who picked
the 45 rpm
that blasted
from the stereo
I'll never
know

"he bends
and whispers something
softly
he says
there's no chance
for me"

an older brother
or sister
perhaps
laughing
between their
tokes

"life
is flowing out
my body
pain
is flowing out
with my blood"

our teacher
stopped
the music
as soon
as she realized
what was going on
and what
was oozing
through the
speakers

"the sheets
are red and moist
where I'm lying
God in Heaven
teach me
how to die"

too late
for this
11 year old psyche
as that song
is forever ingrained
upon my brain
intertwined
with birthdays
cake
and ice cream

"I remember
we were flying along
and hit something
in the air…"

I wonder
if I
am the only
one

P.S. Happy Birthday, Margie
